Today, October 25th, we are officially 59 days away from my favorite time of year – Christmas! The house is full of fun decorations, the air is full of yummy smelling treats and goodies, and most importantly I am surrounded by my family. What more could a girl ask for? That’s why when I was asked to review the newly released DVD of The Heart of Christmas, I eagerly took the opportunity. I LOVE Christmas movies – who doesn’t?!
As it turns out, this film is not exactly your traditional Christmas film. The Heart of Christmas is the true life story of the Locke family and their journey through their son Dax’s battle with leukemia. With hope, compassion and faith this devastated family endeavors to give their young son the best that life has to offer in the short amount of time they have left with him. When their community hears of the tragic news, they come together in support and love to join in the celebration that would be Dax’s last Christmas (even if it was October).
This film stars a number of familiar faces: Candace Cameron-Bure ( DJ Tanner from Full House anyone?!), George Newbern (Bryan from Father of the Bride), and even Dendrie Taylor (Luanne from Sons of Anarchy and Beverleen from True Blood). I thought each of these actors performances were really good and I had no trouble assimilating them into the roles they played, despite being very familiar with their earlier characters.
I found this film touching, though very heartbreaking. In fair warning, you’ll need at least one box of tissue to get through this one. I will admit to crying quite a bit, even though I did my best to hold it all in. Obviously any cancer related topic is going to be sad, but when it deals with ill children it just gets worse. Because we’re talking childhood cancer, you’ll notice that this serves as a kind of billboard for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital – the two go hand in hand, so be prepared to want to give them every last cent for the incredible work that they do. Despite the sad nature of the film, I found the portrayal of the parents to be one of strength, resolve, faith and hope. Despite their heartbreaking news, they were able to focus on the present and enjoy what little time left they had with their son. This film illustrated a number of important points like faith and companionship, it really drove home how important it is to put aside the consumer comforts of life and focus on what is really important – spending time with the ones we love.
All in all, I would say this family friendly film is a great opportunity to reflect on our own loved ones and resolve to focus more on the intangible treasures that life brings.
