So reducing stress for your psychological well-being hasn’t been a sufficient motivator. Maybe you’re a “book with pictures” kind of person; stress has visible effects on skin. Nueropeptides—inflammatory stress chemicals–are emitted from nerve endings when you feel anxious. These chemicals put vascular activity into overdrive, and exacerbate acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Research has also shown that the skin’s barrier function improves with declines in stress. This leads to an increased ability to retain water (think softer, more hydrated-looking skin) and decreased susceptibility to being penetrated by environmental stressors.
You can cope with stressful situations even if you can’t avoid them altogether, and learning how to change negative perceptions can help prevent catastrophizing. Ultimately the best form of stress management will be personal, but options include meditation, various types of therapy, exercise, and participating in more social activities. If you’ve been feeling stressed out, your skin should not be the utmost of your worries, but caring for your mental health will show on the exterior.
