When it comes to frozen seafood products there is one brand that always jumps to my mind – Gorton’s! As a kid I can remember loving their fish sticks, and in fact I still do. But they are oh so much more than fish sticks these days. They’e got a great variety of seafood items that range from tilapia to salmon, and even crunchy breaded clams – yum!
When we were approached to try out Gorton’s newest products we were right in the middle of a a diet, so this review could not have come at a better time. Fish is naturally a great source of lean protein and critical nutrients like vitamins and minerals including iron; zinc; and vitamins A, B and D. For the best health benefit it is recommended that you eat fish at least two times a week. Initally we were a little concerned with the caloric content of these dishes, as they are breaded. However, we were delighted to find out they have a new line of products that are all 200 calories or less per serving, which fits in perfectly with our new way of eating. So we ran to the store and chose a box of the new Gorton’s Skillet Crisp Tilapia.
We decided to really savor the flavor of these we’d pair them with a simple side dish – buttered noodles and peas one night, and rice pilaf the next. And I have to say, these did not disappoint! First off, the fish cooked up super quick – in fact, from start to finish dinner took less than 30 minutes. Any time I can save these days is a major bonus in my book, so these get extra points for being easy to prepare. The breading on the fillets was very thin so they didn’t get greasy at all and they really had excellent flavor. The tilapia is super mild so I could see using this in a number of yummy recipes since it takes on whatever you cook with it. Next time I think we’ll try making fish sandwiches or maybe even fish tacos. I really like the versatility that this fish afforded us and can see myself buying it many times again. Even the little girls liked it!
